The Count of Monte Cristo

By Dan Callahan
The novel Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress had many books interwoven into the plot of the novel.  One of those books is a well known classic The Count of Monte Cristo.  This book was one of those that Luo and Ma stole from four eyes. Out of all the books they stole, The Count of Monte Cristo was the favorite of Ma.  When the tailor is staying with Luo and Ma, Ma retells this story to Luo and the tailor.  He chooses this particular story because he wanted to tell a story that Luo had not yet read and one that would interest the tailor.  He was taking a risk that the tailor would tell the headmen that they have books.              The Count of Monte Cristo was a book written in 1884 by Alexandre Dumas.  The book told about the adventures of Edmond Dantes.  Dantes was a sailor, during the post-Napoleonic era, who was thrown in jail on false charges of treason.  After escaping from prison he exacts his revenge on all of the people who had worked to put him in jail for the crime he did not commit.              During the Cultural Revolution The Count of Monte Cristo was one of many books that were banned in China.  It was banned because it was a piece of western literature and had non communist ideas in it.  One of those non communist ides in the book was the Count was of nobility.  In communism all people are equal members of the society and therefore no one is consider noble or above any one else.
